Drones
For businesses and professionals who use drones in their activity: filming, inspection, surveying or agriculture.
Why insure your drone
Flying is regulated
Operating a drone means complying with a set of rules, one of which is proving third-party liability cover. The policy is the proof that you have it.
An accident gives no warning
A gust of wind, a loss of signal or a moment's distraction is enough for the aircraft to fall. If it damages someone or something on the way down, the claim comes back to you.
The aircraft is worth money too
As well as answering to third parties, you can protect the drone itself and its equipment against theft and flight damage.
What's covered
The specific cover and its limits depend on the company and the option you take out. At Retuerto y Asociados we set it out in writing before you decide.
Third-party liability
Covers personal injury and material damage that the drone causes to third parties during operation, up to the limit contracted.
Theft
Covers the theft of the drone and, depending on the option, of the auxiliary equipment: controller, batteries, cameras and accessories.
Legal expenses
Assistance and defence for the pilot and the operator when a flight ends in a claim or an administrative proceeding.
Cyber risks
Protection against interference with, or unauthorised access to, the control systems and the footage captured.
The insurance does not pay fines or penalties: it covers the defence against the proceedings and the damage caused, not the administrative penalty.
Which drones can be insured
The policy is sized according to what you fly for and with which aircraft, not according to what it cost you. These are the uses we see most often at the brokerage:
- Recreational flying, as a hobby and without payment
- Professional use: audiovisual filming, inspection of roofs and installations, surveying, agriculture or surveillance
- Racing aircraft, which are very fast and have more claims than you might think
- Delivery drones and drones transporting material to hard-to-reach areas
What isn't covered
Almost all the exclusions in these policies point to the same thing: flying where or how you shouldn't. If the drone operates in a restricted area — the vicinity of an airport, a zone with flight restrictions — and causes damage, there is no cover.
The same applies to flights outside the declared conditions: at night if the policy doesn't provide for it, over crowds of people, or above the authorised altitude. And there are borderline situations worth reading carefully: if the wind carries the aircraft away, the company's response depends on where you were flying at that moment.
That's why at Retuerto y Asociados we go through the type of operation with you before you take out the policy. It's the only way to make sure the policy responds on the day it's needed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need insurance if I only fly for fun?
Even in recreational flying, you're liable for any damage you cause. The requirement and the limits vary according to the weight of the aircraft and the type of operation; tell us which drone you have and what you use it for and we'll tell you what applies to you.
Does the insurance pay fines?
No. No policy covers administrative penalties. What legal expenses cover does provide is assistance and representation during the proceedings.
Can I insure several drones under the same policy?
Yes. When flying is done professionally, it's usual to insure the operation rather than each aircraft separately. We look at this according to your fleet.
Does the policy work outside Spain?
It depends on the territorial scope contracted. If you're going to operate abroad, let us know beforehand: it can be extended, but it needs to be done with the policy in hand.
What an insurance broker really is
The broker is the expert who acts as an intermediary between the insurance company and the client, representing the insured party and their interests rather than the insurer alone.
We are the only qualified professionals legally authorised to advise with strict independence and impartiality from insurance companies.
- We compare the marketAdvice based on an objective analysis of policies from a sufficient number of insurance companies.
- It costs you nothingThe broker is paid by the insurer in the form of commissions. In principle, the service costs the client nothing.
- We handle everythingFrom taking out the policy through to the claim, should one arise.
- We defend your interestsBefore the insurance company, in the same way a lawyer would.

Five ideas we hear often that prove costly the day there's a claim.
"Going it alone works out cheaper."
The broker costs you nothing: the insurer pays them. And they compare several companies at once, which you would otherwise have to approach one by one.
"All policies are the same."
Two policies at the same price can have very different limits, excesses and exclusions. What matters is what the terms say on the day of the claim.
"The broker works for the insurance company."
The broker represents the insured party and their interests. It is the agent who represents the company, which is a different role altogether.
"If I have a claim, I'll sort it out myself."
How the claim is opened and documented shapes everything that follows. We handle it for you, and the claim itself too.
"Switching insurer is a hassle."
We manage it for you, including cancelling the previous policy in time so it doesn't renew automatically.
"The compulsory insurance is enough for me."
The legal minimum covers what you cause to third parties, not what happens to you. That's the difference between a scare and a real problem.
