Tractors and Agricultural Machinery

Compulsory cover to drive on the road, plus the third-party liability for farm work that not every policy includes.

Why insure your machinery

No insurance, no driving

A tractor is a motor vehicle: it needs compulsory insurance and a valid roadworthiness certificate (ITV) to go on public roads, just like any other vehicle.

The cover people forget

Third-party liability for farm work is not included as standard in every policy, and it is the one that responds for damage caused while you're working, not while you're driving.

The machine and the person driving it

The sector records a high number of serious accidents every year. Driver accident cover and damage-to-vehicle cover exist for good reason.

What it covers

The specific cover and its limits depend on the company and the option you choose. At Retuerto y Asociados we put them in writing before you decide.

Compulsory motor liability

Covers personal injury and material damage caused to third parties by the vehicle on public roads, under the terms set out by law.

Farm work liability

Covers damage caused to a third party during farm work, both on and off your land. This is the key cover in this product.

Legal expenses

Assistance and legal defence if an incident with the machine ends up in proceedings, and pursuit of damages when the other party is at fault.

Driver accident cover

Compensation for death or disability of the driver, and cover for the medical care arising from the accident.

Roadside assistance

Towing and help in the event of breakdown or accident, with the particular arrangements required for moving heavy machinery.

Windows and own damage

Glass breakage and, if taken out, damage suffered by the machine itself from accident, fire or rollover.

Increased limits

Raising the liability sums insured above the compulsory minimum when your activity justifies it.

Theft

Theft of the machine and, depending on the option, of implements and equipment attached to it.

What can be insured

These policies aren't only for tractors. They cover the vehicle or work equipment you use on your holding, and cover is adapted to each machine:

  • Tractors of any power output, for private or professional use
  • Combine harvesters, threshers and harvesting machinery
  • Two-wheel tractors and light machinery
  • Trailers and implements attached to the main machine

Agricultural liability

It's worth stopping here, because this is where most policies taken out without advice fall short. Compulsory motor liability covers what happens while driving; farm work liability covers what happens while working.

These are two different things, and the most likely damage on a holding happens while working: an implement that reaches a neighbouring plot, spraying that drifts onto another field, a machine that damages a buried pipe. If the policy doesn't include this cover, you pay for that damage yourself.

At Retuerto y Asociados, the first thing we check on an agricultural policy is whether it includes this cover and with what limit. It's what sets one policy apart from another more than anything else.

The roadworthiness test (ITV), a prior requirement

As with any motor vehicle, a valid technical inspection is a condition for driving legally, and insurers require it to issue or renew the policy.

The price of the policy depends on how the machine is used, on the cover taken out — above all whether it includes agricultural liability and with what limit —, on its weight, its year of registration and its model. That's why two similar tractors can have very different premiums.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tractor's insurance cover the trailer?

Light trailers are usually covered by the policy of the vehicle towing them; above a certain weight they need their own policy. We check this against the trailer's technical documents before deciding.

Can I take out the insurance without a valid ITV?

No. A valid inspection is a condition for issuing the policy, just as insurance is required to pass the inspection. If your ITV has expired, sort that out first and we'll then process the policy.

Does it cover my employees?

The vehicle's insurance covers the driver under the terms taken out. Protection for your staff — workplace accident cover, employers' liability — is arranged under separate policies, which we also prepare for you.

Is the policy valid if I work on land belonging to others?

Yes, provided the agricultural liability cover you take out includes activity carried out away from your own property. It's a point we check specifically when comparing options.

What you should know about

What an Insurance Broker Really Is

The broker is the expert who acts as an intermediary between the insurance company and the client, representing the insured party and their interests, not just the insurer.

We are the only professionals legally qualified to advise with strict independence and impartiality in relation to insurance companies.

  • We compare the marketAdvice based on an objective analysis of contracts from a sufficient number of insurers.
  • It costs you nothingThe broker is paid by the insurer in the form of commissions. In principle, the service is free for the client.
  • We take care of everythingFrom taking out the policy through to any claim, should one arise.
  • We defend your interestsBefore the company, just as a lawyer would.
Common misconceptions

What people tend to believe, and what actually happens

Five things we hear often that prove costly the day there's a claim.

«Going it alone is cheaper.»

The broker costs you nothing: the insurer pays them. And we compare several companies at once that you would otherwise have to approach one by one.

«All policies are the same.»

Two policies at the same price can have very different limits, excesses and exclusions. What matters is what the terms say on the day of the claim.

«The broker works for the insurer.»

The broker represents the insured party and their interests. It is the insurer's agent who represents the company — a different role altogether.

«If I have a claim, I'll sort it out myself.»

How the claim is opened and documented shapes everything that follows. We handle it for you, including any dispute.

«Switching insurer is a hassle.»

We take care of it, including cancelling the previous policy in time so it doesn't renew automatically.

«Compulsory cover is enough for me.»

The legal minimum covers damage you cause to others, not what happens to you. That's the difference between a scare and a real problem.
