Drones
Third-party liability, theft and legal expenses for anyone piloting a remote-controlled aircraft, whether as a hobby or for work.
Why insure your drone
Flying is regulated
Operating a drone means complying with a set of rules, including proof of third-party liability cover. The policy is your proof that you have it.
An accident gives no warning
A gust of wind, a lost signal or a moment's distraction is all it takes for the aircraft to fall. If it hurts someone or damages something on the way down, the claim comes back to you.
The aircraft itself is worth money too
Besides your liability to third parties, you can also protect the drone itself and its equipment against theft and flight damage.
What it covers
The specific cover and its limits depend on the insurer and the type of policy you take out. At Retuerto y Asociados we set it all out in writing before you decide.
Third-party liability
Covers personal injury and material damage the drone causes to third parties during operation, up to the contracted limit.
Theft
Covers the theft of the drone and, depending on the policy, of ancillary equipment: controller, batteries, cameras and accessories.
Legal expenses
Assistance and defence for the pilot and the operator when a flight ends in a claim or an administrative proceeding.
Cyber risks
Protection against interference with, or unauthorised access to, the control systems and the footage captured.
The insurance does not pay fines or penalties: it covers the defence against the proceedings and the damage caused, not the administrative penalty itself.
Which drones can be insured
The policy is sized according to what you fly for and with which aircraft, not according to what it cost you. These are the uses we see most often at the brokerage:
- Recreational flying, as a hobby and with no payment involved
- Professional use: filming, inspection of roofs and installations, surveying, agriculture or surveillance
- Racing drones, which are very fast and involve more claims than you might think
- Delivery drones and drones for transporting materials to hard-to-reach areas
What isn't covered
Almost all the exclusions in these policies point to the same thing: flying where or how you shouldn't. If the drone operates in a restricted area — near an airport, or a zone with flight restrictions — and causes damage, there is no cover.
The same applies to flights outside the declared conditions: at night if the policy doesn't provide for it, over crowds of people, or above the authorised height. And there are borderline situations worth reading carefully: if the wind carries the aircraft off course, the insurer's response depends on where you were flying at that moment.
That's why at Retuerto y Asociados we go through the type of operation with you before you take out cover. It's the only way to make sure the policy responds on the day it's needed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need insurance if I only fly as a hobby?
Even in recreational flying, you are liable for any damage you cause. The requirement and the limits vary according to the weight of the aircraft and the type of operation; tell us what drone you have and what you use it for, and we'll tell you what applies to you.
Does the insurance pay fines?
No. No policy covers administrative penalties. What legal expenses cover does provide is assistance and representation during the proceedings.
Can I insure several drones under the same policy?
Yes. When flying professionally, it's usual to insure the operation rather than each aircraft separately. We look at this according to your fleet.
Does the policy work outside Spain?
It depends on the territorial scope contracted. If you're going to operate abroad, let us know beforehand: it can be extended, but it needs to be arranged before you go, policy in hand.
What an Insurance Broker really is
The broker is the expert who mediates between the insurance company and the client, representing the insured party and their interests, rather than the insurer exclusively.
We are the only professionals legally qualified to advise with strict independence and impartiality from insurance companies.
- We compare the marketAdvice based on an objective analysis of policies from a sufficient number of insurance companies.
- It costs you nothingThe broker is paid by the insurer in the form of commission. In principle, the service costs the client nothing.
- We take care of everythingFrom taking out the policy to the claim, should one arise.
- We defend your interestsWith the insurer, in the same way a lawyer would.

View policyWhat people tend to believe, and what actually happens
Five ideas we hear often, and that turn out to be costly the day there's a claim.
"Going it alone is cheaper."
The broker costs you nothing: they're paid by the insurer. And they compare several companies at once, which you would otherwise have to approach one by one.
"All policies are the same."
Two policies at the same price can have very different limits, excesses and exclusions. What matters is what the terms say on the day of the claim.
"The broker works for the insurer."
The broker represents the policyholder and their interests. The one who represents the company is its agent, which is a different role altogether.
"If I have a claim, I'll sort it out myself."
How the report is opened and documented shapes the whole process that follows. We handle that for you, and the claim too.
"Switching insurer is a hassle."
We manage it for you, including cancelling the previous policy in time so it doesn't renew on its own.
"The compulsory minimum is enough for me."
The legal minimum covers what you cause to others, not what happens to you. That's the difference between a scare and a real problem.
