Tractors and Farm Machinery
Tractors and machinery for the self-employed farmer, with liability for the work carried out included.
Why insure your machinery
No insurance, no driving
A tractor is a motor vehicle: it needs compulsory insurance and a valid MOT-equivalent inspection (ITV) to go out on public roads, just like any other vehicle.
The cover people forget
Liability for agricultural work is not included as standard in every policy, and it's the one that responds to damage caused while you're working, not while you're driving.
The machine and its operator
The sector sees a high number of serious accidents every year. Driver accident cover and vehicle damage cover exist for good reason.
What's covered
The specific cover and its limits depend on the insurer and the option you choose. At Retuerto y Asociados we set it all out in writing before you decide.
Compulsory road liability
Covers personal injury and material damage caused to third parties by the vehicle on public roads, under the terms set by law.
Agricultural work liability
Covers damage caused to a third party while carrying out fieldwork, both on and off your own land. This is the key cover for this product.
Legal expenses
Assistance and defence if an incident with the machine ends up in legal proceedings, and claiming damages when someone else is responsible.
Driver accident cover
Compensation for the death or disability of the driver and cover for medical care arising from the accident.
Roadside assistance
Towing and help in the event of breakdown or accident, with the particulars required for moving heavy machinery.
Glass and own damage
Broken glass and, if taken out, damage to the machine itself from accident, fire or rollover.
Higher limits
Raising liability limits above the compulsory minimum where the activity justifies it.
Theft
Theft of the machine and, depending on the option, of the implements and equipment attached to it.
What can be insured
These policies are not only for tractors. They cover the vehicle or working equipment used on the holding, and the cover is tailored to each machine:
- Tractors of any power, for private or professional use
- Combine harvesters, threshers and harvesting machinery
- Two-wheel tractors (motocultores) and light machinery
- Trailers and implements attached to the main machine
Agricultural liability
It's worth pausing here, because this is where most policies taken out without advice fall short. Compulsory road liability covers what happens while driving; agricultural work liability covers what happens while working.
These are two different things, and the most likely damage on a holding happens while working: an implement that reaches a neighbouring plot, a treatment that drifts onto another field, a machine that damages a buried pipe. If the policy doesn't include this cover, you pay for that damage yourself.
At Retuerto y Asociados, the first thing we check on an agricultural policy is whether it includes this cover and with what limit. It's what sets one policy apart from another more than anything else.
The ITV, a prerequisite
As with any motor vehicle, a valid technical inspection is a condition for driving legally, and insurers require it in order to issue or renew the policy.
The price of the policy depends on how the machine is used, the cover taken out — above all whether it includes agricultural liability and to what limit — its weight, registration year and model. That's why two similar tractors can have very different premiums.
Frequently asked questions
Does the tractor's insurance cover the trailer?
Light trailers are usually covered by the policy of the vehicle towing them; above a certain weight they need their own policy. We check this against the trailer's technical specifications before deciding.
Can I take out the insurance without a valid ITV?
No. A valid inspection is a condition for issuing the policy, just as the insurance is a condition for passing the inspection. If your ITV has expired, sort that out first and we'll then arrange the policy.
Does it cover my employees?
The vehicle insurance covers the driver under the agreed terms. Cover for your workforce — statutory accident cover, employers' liability — comes under separate policies, which we can also arrange for you.
Does the policy apply if I work on other people's land?
Yes, provided the agricultural work liability cover you've taken out includes activity carried out off your own property. It's a point we specifically check when comparing policies.
What an Insurance Broker really is
A broker is the expert who acts as an intermediary between the insurer and the client, representing the insured party and their interests, rather than the insurer alone.
We are the only professionals legally qualified to advise with strict independence and impartiality from insurance companies.
- We compare the marketAdvice based on an objective analysis of contracts from a sufficient number of insurance companies.
- It costs you nothingThe broker is paid by the insurer in the form of commission. In principle, our service has no cost to the client.
- We take care of everythingFrom taking out the policy through to the claim, should one arise.
- We defend your interestsBefore the insurer, just as a solicitor would.

View coverWhat people tend to think, and what really happens
Five ideas we often hear that end up costing dearly on the day there's a claim.
"Going it alone works out cheaper."
A broker costs you nothing: we're paid by the insurer. And we compare several insurers at once, which you would otherwise have to approach one by one.
"All policies are the same."
Two policies at the same price can have very different limits, excesses and exclusions. What matters is what the terms say on the day of the claim.
"The broker works for the insurer."
The broker represents the insured party and their interests. The insurer's representative is its agent, which is a different role entirely.
"If I have a claim, I'll sort it out myself."
How the claim is opened and documented shapes everything that follows. We handle it for you, including the claim itself.
"Switching insurer is a hassle."
We handle it for you, including cancelling the previous policy in time so it doesn't renew automatically.
"The compulsory cover is enough for me."
The legal minimum covers what you cause to third parties, not what happens to you. That's the difference between a scare and a real problem.
