Electric scooter

Liability cover to ride, with the option of also covering accidents and the scooter itself.

Why insure your scooter

For everyday use

If you get around the city on a scooter, you share the space with pedestrians, cyclists and cars. It usually goes well; the problem is the "usually".

To be liable for damage

A pedestrian who falls, a parked car with a dent. The scooter may be small, but the compensation claimed from you doesn't have to be.

To protect yourself

In a fall, you're the one with the most at stake. Accident and medical expenses cover is there for exactly that, regardless of who was at fault.

What it covers

The specific cover and its limits depend on the company and the type of policy you take out. At Retuerto y Asociados, we put them in writing for you before you decide.

Liability

Personal injury or damage caused to other people while riding. This is the basic cover and is included in every type of policy.

Legal defence and claims

Legal expenses cover if a claim is brought against you for a covered accident, and pursuing a claim for damage when someone else is at fault. Does not cover fines or penalties.

Personal accident

Compensation for death or permanent disability resulting from a scooter accident, according to the sum insured.

Medical expenses

Reimbursement of medical, pharmacy and hospital expenses from a covered accident, within the limits of the policy.

Theft

In the extended options, theft of the scooter when it is secured to a fixed point with an approved lock. Does not cover petty theft or loss.

Accidental damage

In the most comprehensive option, damage suffered by the scooter in an accident. Breakdowns, wear and tear, and purely cosmetic damage are excluded.

Hospitalisation

Compensation for each day of hospital admission resulting from a covered accident, up to the agreed maximum number of days.

Reconstructive surgery

Reimbursement of reconstructive plastic surgery required because of permanent injuries from a covered accident.

A small bump, a big bill

Electric scooters are convenient and quick, which is exactly why they are used in the busiest, most crowded areas. A moment's distraction, an unexpected stop or a misjudged kerb is all it takes for someone to be injured.

When the injured party is someone else, what's claimed from you isn't the value of the scooter: it's time off work, medical care and, if there are lasting effects, the compensation due. Without a policy, that comes out of your own pocket.

When you're the one injured, the bill is still there, in the form of medical expenses and days unable to work. That's why these policies cover both sides: liability towards others and protection for you.

Types of cover and exclusions

Companies usually offer three levels. The basic option covers only liability, legal expenses and personal cover. The mid-level option adds theft. The most comprehensive option also covers damage to the scooter itself.

The exclusions are the same across the board: mechanical breakdowns, wear from use, lack of maintenance and purely cosmetic damage are never included. For theft and damage to the scooter itself, an excess usually applies, meaning a portion of the amount that the insured party pays themselves.

At Retuerto y Asociados, we tell you which type of cover suits how you use it: a weekend scooter is not the same as one you ride every morning to get to work.

Frequently asked questions

Is it compulsory to insure a scooter?

The regulatory trend, and many local council bylaws, are moving towards requiring liability insurance for personal mobility vehicles. Tell us which municipality you ride in and we'll confirm what's required of you.

Does my home insurance cover it?

Some home insurance policies include family liability cover that could extend to certain uses, but with low limits and frequent exclusions for personal mobility vehicles. We'll check your policy and tell you exactly what the small print says.

Does it cover if someone else rides it?

It depends on how the policy was taken out: some are linked to the scooter and others to the rider. If more people in the household will use it, let us know when you take out the policy.

Does it cover traffic fines?

No. No policy covers penalties. Legal expenses cover deals with assistance during the proceedings, not the amount of the fine.

What you should know about

What an Insurance Broker really is

A broker is the expert who mediates between the insurance company and the client, representing the insured party and their interests, rather than the insurer alone.

We are the only professionals legally qualified to advise with strict independence and impartiality with regard to insurance companies.

  • We compare the marketAdvice based on an objective analysis of contracts from a sufficient number of insurance companies.
  • It costs you nothingThe broker is paid by the insurer, in the form of commissions. In principle, the service costs the client nothing.
  • We take care of everythingFrom taking out the policy to the claim, should one arise.
  • We defend your interestsBefore the company, in the same way a lawyer would.
Common misconceptions

What people tend to believe, and what actually happens

Five ideas we hear often, and that prove costly the day there's a claim.

"Going it alone is cheaper."

The broker costs you nothing: they're paid by the insurer. And they compare several companies at once, which you'd otherwise have to approach one by one.

"All policies are the same."

Two policies at the same price can have very different limits, excesses and exclusions. What matters is what the terms say on the day of the claim.

"The broker works for the insurer."

The broker represents the insured party and their interests. It's the agent who represents the company, and that's a different role altogether.

"If I have a claim, I'll sort it out myself."

How the claim is opened and documented shapes the whole process that follows. We handle it, and the claim itself too.

"Switching insurer is a hassle."

We handle it, including cancelling the previous policy in time so it doesn't renew automatically.

"The compulsory insurance is enough for me."

The legal minimum covers what you cause to others, not what happens to you. That's the difference between a scare and a real problem.
