Drones
For businesses that operate drone fleets or provide professional services with unmanned aircraft.
Why insure your drone
Flying is regulated
Operating a drone requires you to comply with a set of rules, one of which is proving you have liability cover. The policy is the proof that you have it.
An accident gives no warning
A gust of wind, a loss of signal or a moment's distraction is all it takes for the aircraft to fall. If it falls and damages someone or something, the claim is made against you.
The aircraft is worth money too
As well as covering your liability to third parties, you can protect the drone itself and its equipment against theft and flight damage.
What it covers
The specific cover and its limits depend on the insurer and the option you choose. At Retuerto y Asociados we put them in writing before you decide.
Liability
Covers personal injury and property damage the drone causes to third parties during operation, up to the contracted limit.
Theft
Covers theft of the drone and, depending on the option, of auxiliary equipment: controller, batteries, cameras and accessories.
Legal expenses
Assistance and representation for the pilot and the operator when a flight ends in a claim or an administrative case.
Cyber risks
Protection against interference with, or unauthorised access to, the control systems and the footage captured.
The insurance does not pay fines or penalties: it covers the defence in the proceedings and the damage caused, not the administrative penalty.
Which drones can be insured
The policy is sized according to what you fly for and what aircraft you use, not according to what it cost you. These are the uses we see most often at the brokerage:
- Recreational flying, as a hobby and with no payment involved
- Professional use: filming, inspection of roofs and installations, surveying, agriculture or surveillance
- Racing drones, which are very fast and have more claims than you'd expect
- Delivery and cargo drones for hard-to-reach areas
What isn't covered
Almost all the exclusions in these policies point to the same thing: flying where or how you shouldn't. If the drone operates in a restricted area — the surroundings of an airport, a zone with flight restrictions — and causes damage, there is no cover.
The same applies to flights outside the declared conditions: at night if the policy doesn't allow for it, over crowds of people, or above the authorised height. And there are borderline situations worth reading carefully: if the wind carries the aircraft off course, the insurer's response depends on where you were flying at that moment.
That's why at Retuerto y Asociados we go over the type of operation with you before you take out the policy. It's the only way to make sure the policy responds on the day it's needed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need insurance if I only fly as a hobby?
Even in recreational flying you are liable for any damage you cause. The requirement and the limits vary according to the aircraft's weight and the type of operation; tell us what drone you have and what you use it for, and we'll tell you what applies to you.
Does the insurance pay fines?
No. No policy covers administrative penalties. What legal expenses cover does provide is assistance and representation during the proceedings.
Can I insure several drones under the same policy?
Yes. When flying professionally, it's usual to insure the operation rather than each aircraft separately. We look at this based on your fleet.
Does the policy work outside Spain?
It depends on the territorial scope contracted. If you're going to operate abroad, tell us beforehand: it can be extended, but this needs to be arranged with the policy in place.
What an Insurance Broker really is
A broker is the expert who acts between the insurance company and the client, representing the insured party and their interests, and not the insurer exclusively.
We are the only professionals legally qualified to advise with strict independence and impartiality from insurance companies.
- We compare the marketAdvice based on an objective analysis of contracts from a sufficient number of insurance companies.
- It costs you nothingThe broker is paid by the insurer in the form of commissions. In principle, the service has no cost for the client.
- We handle everythingFrom taking out the policy to the claim, if one arises.
- We defend your interestsBefore the insurance company, in the same way a solicitor would.
What people tend to believe, and what actually happens
Five ideas we hear often, which turn out to be costly on the day there's a claim.
"Going it alone is cheaper."
The broker costs you nothing: the insurer pays them. And we compare several companies at once, which you would otherwise have to approach one by one.
"All policies are the same."
Two policies at the same price can have very different limits, excesses and exclusions. What matters is what the terms say on the day of the claim.
"The broker works for the insurer."
The broker represents the insured party and their interests. It's the insurer's agent, a different role altogether, who represents the company.
"If I have a claim, I'll sort it out myself."
How the claim form is opened and documented shapes everything that follows. We handle that for you, and the claim itself too.
"Switching insurer is a hassle."
We handle it for you, including cancelling the previous policy in time so it doesn't renew automatically.
"The compulsory insurance is enough for me."
The legal minimum covers what you cause to others, not what happens to you. That's the difference between a scare and a real problem.
